The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has raised alarms over ongoing nuclear safety concerns at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that the plant's safety remains "in jeopardy" due to recurring power disconnections.
In a statement to the IAEA Board of Governors, Grossi explained that the facility lost connection to its sole operational 750-kilovolt (kV) power line twice in recent days.
The first incident occurred last Saturday, caused by damage 17 kilometres away from the plant.
The disconnection lasted over 30 hours before repairs were completed by Sunday noon. However, on Thursday, the plant faced another power line outage.
During these outages, the ZNPP has had to depend on a single 330 kV backup power line for essential functions, including reactor cooling.
Grossi emphasised that relying on limited backup power is a precarious situation for a facility of this magnitude.
Before the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the ZNPP operated with multiple power lines—four 750 kV and six 330 kV connections.
The war has significantly disrupted this infrastructure, heightening risks to nuclear safety.
