Imran Khan’s political advisor abducted in Lahore

In a setback to jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, his political advisor Ghulam Shabbir was reportedly abducted while travelling from Lahore to Islamabad.

Ghulam Shabbir, political advisor to jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, has reportedly been abducted by unidentified persons in Lahore, according to media reports on Thursday.

Shabbir, who is the elder brother of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill, was allegedly abducted two days ago while travelling to Islamabad, as per an FIR filed at Kahna police station, Pakistani media outlets reported.

The FIR, lodged by his son Bilal, states that Shabbir left his residence in Lahore's Khayaban-e-Amin late at night before heading towards Islamabad. No further details were available.

Imran Khan, the 71-year-old founder of the PTI party, has been in jail since August last year following his conviction in some of the nearly 200 cases filed against him since his ouster in April 2022.

In May 2022, the former cricketer-turned-politician initiated a march from Lahore to Islamabad, aiming to topple the coalition government of Shehbaz Sharif, which took over the government after Khan was removed from office through a vote of no confidence.

The law and order situation in Pakistan is reportedly worsening poor administration and the decline of social and political institutions.

Recently, six Supreme Court judges in Pakistan complained to the president and chief justice, alleging interference by the Pakistani army in judicial matters and cases of national significance.

Political assassinations, targeted killings of opposition leaders, and the execution of journalists have surged in recent times.

While Imran Khan was in jail, PTI, was dissolved, its election symbol taken away, and members forced to contest elections as independents.

Khan alleged that this move was intended to split the vote bank to benefit the current regime.
