External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Thai counterpart, Maris Sangiampongsa, in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations, multilateral cooperation, and regional developments.
In a post on X, Jaishankar noted, “Delighted to meet FM @AmbPoohMaris of Thailand today in Delhi. His visit for the Royal Kathina ceremony exemplifies the longstanding historical and cultural relations between our two countries. We discussed India-Thailand ties, multilateral cooperation and regional developments.”
The Thai minister's visit is significant as it coincides with the Royal Kathina ceremony, a traditional Buddhist observance. Sangiampongsa is set to depart India on Sunday following his engagement.
The recent meeting follows Sangiampongsa's first official visit to India, which took place from July 11-13 during the second BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers' Retreat, hosted by Jaishankar. During that visit, Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting and a lunch in honour of Sangiampongsa.
The ministers reviewed the progress across various partnership areas during their previous meeting and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
They reiterated their commitment to closer cooperation in sub-regional, regional, and multilateral forums.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions reflect the vision of both prime ministers for a stronger India-Thailand partnership.
Thailand is a vital partner for India within the ASEAN framework, and the two countries' policies—India's 'Act East' and Thailand's 'Act West'—align closely.
Jaishankar's ongoing interactions with the Thai foreign minister have significantly contributed to the strengthening of these bilateral ties.
