India and UN honour General KS Thimayya in Cyprus

The Indian High Commission in Cyprus, together with the United Nations Office, recently held a tribute to one of India's greatest military legends, General KS Thimayya.

India honours General Thimayya’s memory in Cyprus ceremony.


The Indian High Commission in Cyprus, together with the United Nations Office, recently held a tribute to one of India's greatest military legends, General KS Thimayya.

 

The General died in Nicosia in 1965 while serving as the UN Force Commander in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

 

The event was hosted at the UNFICYP Memorial in Nicosia and dignitaries attending included High Commissioner Shri Manish, UNFICYP Force Commander Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri, Senior Advisor Aderemi Adekoya among other senior officials.

 

In a statement shared on social media, the Indian High Commission celebrated General Thimayya's legacy, describing him as a "soldier par excellence" and highlighting his tenure as the Chief of the Indian Army from 1957 to 1961.

 

In his tribute, the Republic of Cyprus allocated a very important road in Larnaca to be called "Gen Thimayya Road" and dedicated a commemorative stamp immortalizing him in the year 1966.

 

General Thimayya's selfless dedication and exemplary leadership are indeed figures of lives devoted to service and humanity.

 

These have been the celebrations from the Indian end recognizing the terrific contributions of Indian peacekeepers in the United Nations Peacekeeping mission, as Indian peacekeepers recently received accolades for their contribution in Sudan, involving big ticket infrastructure, veterinary assistance, and flood mitigation, which show India's commitment to peace and cooperation around the globe.

 

India and Cyprus have a rich and profound heritage in the mutual values of democracy, peace, and affirmation of human rights. This entailed common histories in the struggles against colonialism enhancing thus the ties of friendship.

 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar starts his first official visit to Cyprus, marking the major strategic partnership between the two nations.

 

The commemorative event not only celebrated the legacy of General Thimayya but also symbolised the enduring friendship and shared commitment of India and Cyprus to global peace and collaboration.
