External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi reviewed progress in the disengagement of the troops from both sides in Demchok and Depsang in Eastern Ladakh on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio.
It was the first high-level engagement between the two sides after the completion of the disengagement process in the two main friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the mountainous region.
After his successful talks with the Chinese counterpart, EAM said that both sides have reviewed the next steps in the India-China bilateral relations.
In his post on X, the external affairs minister posted on Monday that, “On the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio, met CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi of China.”
“We noted the progress in the recent disengagement in the India-China border areas. And exchanged views on the next steps in our bilateral ties. Also discussed the global situation,” he said.
Brazil is hosting the G20 Summit on Monday and Tuesday.
India and China completed the disengagement exercise in both Demchok and Depsang last month after the two sides formally agreed to resolve the border tensions that started in 2020.
Both sides resumed patrolling activities in two places after a gap of nearly four and a half years.
Before the start of the disengagement process, the two sides were engaged in a fierce standoff at mountainous terrain in the eastern Ladakh region.
On Monday, the diplomats from both countries greeted one another with warm greetings during the G20 summit in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.
