India extends a helping hand to Zambia amid cholera crisis
India on Monday dispatched approximately 3.5 tonnes of aid, including crucial medicines, to Zambia to assist in combating the devastating cholera outbreak.
The aid, transported via commercial cargo aircraft, consists of essential supplies such as water purification materials, chlorine tablets, and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) sachets.
Zambia finds itself grappling with one of its most severe health emergencies, as the cholera outbreak has claimed nearly 600 lives and infected over 15,000 individuals since October 2023.
The crisis has affected nine out of Zambia's 10 provinces, with the majority of cases concentrated in Lusaka, the capital city housing around 3 million residents.
Authorities have established a makeshift treatment center outside the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka to manage the influx of cholera patients.
The dire situation prompted India's swift response, demonstrating international cooperation in times of crisis.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Government has also extended a significant financial aid of K20 million to bolster Zambia's efforts to counter the cholera epidemic.
There have been recent cholera outbreaks in other southern African nations, including Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe as well. More than 200,000 cases and over 3,000 deaths have been reported in southern Africa since the start of 2023, according to UNICEF.
