External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “measured and responsible” approach in its ongoing standoff with Pakistan, following diplomatic outreach from the United States urging both nations to de-escalate tensions.
A senior US diplomat has emphasised the need of de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following aggressive attempts by Islamabad to target both civilian areas and military installations in Jammu and Kashmir.
During a conversation with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged both nations to “identify methods to de-escalate”. In response, Jaishankar reiterated that India has consistently maintained a measured and responsible stance.
In a statement shared online, Jaishankar said, “Had a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so.”
The remarks come after Secretary Rubio, a key figure in the Donald Trump administration, reached out to both Indian and Pakistani leaderships to encourage dialogue and reduce hostilities. Earlier in the day, Rubio had also spoken to Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir, echoing the same appeal for restraint.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that Rubio offered US’s support to initiate “constructive” talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
This is the second time Rubio spoke to Jaishankar in less than a week. Earlier also, he had emphasized the need for de-escalation in a call with the Indian foreign minister. Rubio also held separate talks with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, pressing Islamabad to take concrete steps to curb support for terrorist networks.
US President Trump also had encouraged the two nations to de-escalate.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had earlier said that President understands that the two countries have been at odds with one another for decades, long before he took over the Oval office, and that he wants to see it de-escalate.
The diplomatic efforts come amid heightened tensions on India’s western front, where Pakistani forces have reportedly targeted civilian areas and attempted strikes on Indian air bases—actions that Indian officials have described as “irresponsible and cowardly.”
