Indian-American teenager Riddhi Chauhan has earned one of the highest student leadership positions in the United States Naval Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC), taking charge of nearly 300 cadets as Battalion Commanding Officer at her school.

The appointment places Chauhan at the helm of all battalion activities, making her responsible for overseeing training, discipline, operations and leadership development within the student military programme.

Known for her commitment and discipline, Chauhan reportedly began arriving at school before 7 am, four days a week, to conduct drill practice, coordinate unit activities and ensure smooth functioning of the battalion. Her responsibilities also included mentoring junior cadets, supervising ceremonial events and maintaining operational readiness.

Chauhan joined the NJROTC programme to strengthen her leadership skills and build confidence. Over the years, she steadily rose through the ranks by demonstrating dedication, organisational ability and a strong work ethic, eventually earning the battalion's top student leadership role.

The NJROTC programme, sponsored by the US Navy, aims to develop leadership, citizenship, character and teamwork among high school students. While it introduces participants to naval traditions and military discipline, it does not require graduates to join the armed forces. Instead, it focuses on preparing young people for leadership roles in any career they choose.

As Battalion Commanding Officer, Chauhan is responsible for planning and executing training exercises, coordinating with instructors, leading parades and ceremonies, and ensuring that hundreds of cadets perform their duties efficiently. The role demands strong decision-making, communication and organisational skills.

Her achievement has drawn praise from educators and the Indian-American community, highlighting the growing contributions of young Indian-origin students in leadership positions across the United States.

Chauhan's appointment reflects the increasing prominence of Indian-Americans in public service, education and leadership, while also underscoring the opportunities available to students through programmes that combine discipline, teamwork and community service with academic development.
