A 27-year-old Indian national, Fazil Khan, tragically lost his life in a devastating fire incident that occurred in an apartment building in Harlem, New York, on Friday. The Indian Embassy in New York swiftly identified the victim and pledged assistance to his grieving family and friends.

Expressing sorrow over the untimely demise, the Indian Embassy posted on X, stating, "Saddened to learn about the death of 27 years old Indian national Mr. Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in an apartment building in Harlem, NY."

The embassy affirmed its commitment to providing all possible assistance in facilitating the repatriation of Khan's mortal remains to India.

Fazil Khan, recognized as a data reporter at The Hechinger Report, and a recent graduate of Columbia Journalism School's data journalism program, was mourned by his colleagues at The Hechinger Report.

Describing him as a "great colleague and a wonderful person," the organization expressed devastation at the loss and extended condolences to Khan's family.

Khan, who was rescued from the building, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

The tragic incident also resulted in injuries to 17 other individuals, according to the same source.

The fire, reportedly ignited by a lithium-ion battery, ravaged the Harlem apartment building, as confirmed by the local fire department.
