A 22-year-old Indian student, Gurasis Singh, was stabbed to death during a fight with his roommate in Sarnia, Canada, on December 1. Gurasis, who was studying business at Lambton College, was from Punjab.
The accused, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently in custody.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours at a shared house on Queen Street. Sarnia Police responded to a 911 call and found Gurasis with multiple stab wounds.
Hunter was taken into custody immediately. He appeared in Ontario Court of Justice via video and was remanded into custody. His next court hearing is scheduled for December 6.
According to the police, a fight broke out in the kitchen, during which Hunter allegedly used a knife to stab Gurasis multiple times. Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, though they do not believe the crime was racially motivated.
Lambton College, where Gurasis was a first-year student in the Business Management – International Business programme, expressed deep sadness over his death.
The college offered condolences to his family and said they are supporting his classmates and friends. They are also assisting with funeral arrangements and repatriation.
