An Indian student enrolled at the University of Calgary in Canada has died under uncertain circumstances, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver confirmed on Thursday. The student was identified as Tanya Tyagi, a young woman who had travelled to Canada to pursue higher education.
While Canadian authorities are yet to release an official statement, the cause of her sudden death remains unknown. The Consulate offered condolences and assured support to the grieving family.
“We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary,” the Consulate posted on X.
“The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased.”
Although the consulate’s message contained a gender error—referring to the student as “his” rather than “her”—it has been widely shared by social media users expressing condolences.

An unverified post on X, tagged to the Prime Minister’s Office of India, claimed that Tanya suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away on 17 June 2025. The post read:
“Appeal 4 help. Tanya Tyagi, a student from Northeast Delhi residing at 559/11D, Lane No 12, Vijay Park, had gone to Canada for studies. She died on June 17, 2025, due to a heart attack. The student's family has appealed to PM Modi for help in bringing her body back.”
There has been no official confirmation of the reported cause from either the Indian or Canadian authorities.
Disturbing pattern
Tanya’s passing marks the latest in a troubling series of incidents involving Indian students abroad. Earlier this year, Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old student and permanent US resident, went missing while on holiday in the Dominican Republic. A student at the University of Pittsburgh, Konanki was last seen on 6 March near a beach at the Riu Punta Cana Hotel.
Despite the involvement of local and international agencies, her whereabouts remain unknown. Spanish media reported details of her clothing and accessories at the time she disappeared, yet no definitive leads have emerged.
