Iran-US mediation efforts show positive signs for a peace deal as ceasefire holds, though both sides continue to stand firm on key demands.

Intense mediation efforts are taking place between Iran and the United States, signalling positive signs about a possible peace deal, even as both sides continue to hold firm on their demands. According to experts, the ongoing exchanges and draft texts indicate that efforts are underway to establish a formal framework for an agreement to end the conflict.

Tehran officials said Pakistani officials are engaged in “intense mediation activity”, while a senior Iranian official said a deal was close, though another Iranian diplomat cautioned that it was too early to conclude.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there were “some good signs” for a deal as US President Donald Trump warned of “very drastic” action if Iran does not give up its uranium stockpiles.

Regional experts say, “Both sides do not want to appear to be giving in. They don’t want to appear to be "losers," using the rhetoric of the president.

In private, they might be willing to make some serious deals, but they also want public protection and don’t want the other side to crow that they’ve been defeated. So publicly, they’re going to put on a very brave front.

The war lasted for 40 days between the two sides, with no decisive victory for either. The US and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire, which is still holding to this day. Yet mixed signals from Washington have raised concerns in the global community about a possible resumption of hostilities since Iran is not giving in to the US demands.
