IOC Thomas Head Bach Will Not Extend His Term Beyond 2025.

Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has made a significant announcement regarding his future in the role. On the final day of the 142nd IOC Session, held on the sidelines of the Paris Olympics, Bach declared that he will step down at the end of his current term in 2025 and will not seek an extension.

Bach, who is a former Olympic gold medalist in fencing from the 1976 Montreal Games, has decided not to pursue a third term beyond his 12-year tenure. Despite previous discussions suggesting the possibility of amending the IOC’s tenure cap to allow an extension, Bach has firmly stated his intention to adhere to the established limits set by the Olympic Charter.

During the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai in October 2023, some members had encouraged Bach to consider a third term if necessary, hinting at potential changes to the Olympic Charter.

At that time, Bach was non-committal and said he would not make any decisions until after the Paris Olympics. His final decision was revealed during a press conference in Paris, where he reiterated that he would not extend his presidency.

In his address to the IOC General Assembly on Saturday, Bach emphasised that the IOC would benefit from a change in leadership after his 12-year term. He expressed that new times require new leaders and that his decision comes after thorough deliberation and discussion.

Bach’s decision not to seek re-election means that, if he were to change his mind, he would face challenges not only in altering the tenure rules but also in addressing the age limit. As he is already 70, which is the upper limit set for an IOC member, any attempt to extend his term would require additional amendments.

The IOC introduced limits on age and tenure in recent years to address past controversies and criticisms. Previously, there were no restrictions, leading to only nine presidents since the IOC’s founding in 1894. Currently, the IOC president serves an eight-year term, with the possibility of a single four-year renewal.

As the IOC prepares for a new phase of leadership, Bach’s decision marks the end of a significant chapter in the organisation’s history. His tenure has been marked by various challenges and changes, and his choice to step down reflects his commitment to adhering to the rules and ensuring a smooth transition for future leadership.
