US President Donald Trump has said Iran is desperate for a peace deal while confirming that there is still plenty of room left to make one.
Thousands of Iranians are on the streets protesting the US's decision to close the Strait from the other side, while Iranian authorities have accused the US of committing piracy in its territorial waters.
According to sources, Washington and Tehran are trying to negotiate a way out of the ongoing deadlock, and mediators like Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are likely contenders to host the next round of US-Iran negotiations.
The sides could meet soon for the “second round of peace talks” as soon as Thursday, reports citing US officials and top diplomats said on Tuesday.
Since the Islamabad meeting, the US and Iranian sides have constantly exchanged views with Pakistani mediators, who are forwarding messages from one side to the other and vice versa.
A US official, referring to Trump’s latest comments that Iran called and would like to work out a deal, said that after the two sides flew back to their respective countries, they are in constant touch with each other through Pakistan.
According to Washington sources, Islamabad could host a second-round meeting between Iran and the United States as early as this week.
However, some US officials said Geneva was also a possibility and that while the venue and timing had not been decided, the talks could happen on Thursday.
Since the breakdown of the talks, oil prices have surged back, while global share markets have tanked, especially the Asian markets, which are heavily dependent on crude and LNG supplies from the Gulf.
