The United States launched fresh attacks on Iran after US forces hit nearly 90 targets in hours-long strikes inside the country, Iranian officials confirmed on Friday.
Meanwhile, a US official has told reporters that Washington had not ordered the latest strikes, raising doubts about possible Israeli involvement in the attacks.
However, no one has claimed responsibility for the latest strikes. At the same time, the US official said that Washington remains committed to negotiations with Iran and that technical talks with Tehran continue.
Iran completed all the necessary procedures for the funeral and burial of the assassinated leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday. According to estimates, over 15 million people from across the country and representatives from around the world attended the funeral of the late supreme leader.
Sources in the White House told reporters on Friday that the US avoided striking Iran on Thursday as it remained committed to finding a diplomatic solution. Technical-level talks continue to reach a nuclear deal.
Meanwhile, mediator Qatar and Pakistan, along with other regional mediators, held multiple phone conversations between Iran and the US on Wednesday in an attempt to bring both sides back to the negotiating table.
“There are extensive diplomatic efforts to first agree with both sides on de-escalation and then set a date for another round of negotiations between the technical teams,” a source in the White House told reporters.
