In a blunt and definitive statement on Monday, the United States military confirmed the total destruction of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) headquarters in Tehran. Describing the precision strike as an operation to "cut off the head of the snake," US officials signalled a catastrophic blow to the heart of Iran’s military and political establishment.
"The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) killed more than 1,000 Americans over the past 47 years. Yesterday, a large-scale US strike cut off the head of the snake," a post from US Central Command (CENTCOM) read on social media.
The IRGC was no ordinary military branch. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the IRGC was created to protect Iran's clerical rule; under the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, it grew into a hugely powerful elite unit, operating almost exclusively in total independence from anything else except himself. It controls enormous sections of the Iranian economy, as well as its overseas covert wars.
In further outlining the magnitude of the regional power shift, the US military went on record stating, "The US has the greatest military in the world [and] IRGC is no more. There is nothing left," which emphasises the massive transition of power that has occurred within the region.
As a result of Ayatollah Khamenei being confirmed dead after multiple attacks, the Iranian regime is experiencing one of the most massive instances of disorder ever seen. After a series of attacks that have destroyed what is left of the IRGC's command-and-control facilities, it seems that the foundation of Iranian domestic and international power has been dismantled overnight.
