Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday, describing the strikes as retaliation for a US attack on Iran's Qeshm Island the previous day. The Iranian Armed Forces stated they targeted the US Fifth Fleet and a US air base in the region in response to what they termed US strikes on an Iranian telecommunications antenna and an oil tanker. They added that the operation fulfilled a previously issued warning that any aggression would be met with a "different and more severe" response.
The United States had launched a strike on Iran's Qeshm Island on June 2, targeting what it described as an Iranian military ground control station used to direct drone operations. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), this action followed the interception of multiple Iranian drones and ballistic missiles launched across the Middle East. However, CENTCOM was quick to issue a fact check later on Wednesday, firmly denying the Iranian claims that its bases in the region had been successfully struck.
In Kuwait, the military confirmed that its air defence systems were actively intercepting hostile missiles and drones early on Wednesday morning, after residents across the country reported hearing loud explosions amid escalating tensions in the Gulf. In an initial statement, the Kuwaiti Army's General Staff clarified that the explosion sounds heard by the public were the direct result of these interception operations.
As the situation unfolded, the Kuwaiti military issued a second public warning, urging citizens and residents to stay away from any fallen debris, shrapnel, or unidentified objects, warning that such remnants posed a serious risk to public safety. Delivered by the Ministry of Defence's official spokesperson, Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, the statement called on the public to immediately report any suspicious debris to emergency services via the 112 hotline and to rely solely on authorised official sources for updates.
Meanwhile, Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB, claimed that American bases in Kuwait had been hit following "hostile actions" by the US in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and on Qeshm Island, though no independent confirmation of these claims was immediately available. IRIB also shared footage on X purporting to show missiles passing through the skies of Bahrain.
In response to the unfolding threat, Bahrain's Interior Ministry activated a warning siren on Wednesday, urging citizens and residents to remain calm and proceed immediately to the nearest safe location while strictly following official safety instructions. The developments mark a significant escalation in regional tensions and are likely to intensify long-standing concerns over maritime and territorial security across the Gulf region.
