Top Iranian officials have warned the United States against miscalculations as US President Donald Trump once again mulls action against Tehran. The officials said Iran will not give in to US blackmail over its nuclear programme and warned that “any potential action by the US or Israel would have broader regional consequences and provoke an unlimited military response.”
According to sources, the US is “well aware of Iran’s response capability and determination", and President Donald Trump is “buying time to try to force Iran to accept his terms by increasing both military and political pressure".
"But Iran will not be bogged down by threats or get confused by the ongoing fruitless negotiation process. Any negotiation with only weak sanctions relief offers has no value for Iran,” they said.
Tensions between the two sides have continued to rise as Omani-mediated talks in Geneva ended in a stalemate.
Trump, who backed out of the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal during his first term in office, has constantly demanded that Iran completely dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. On Thursday, he set a 10- to 15-day deadline to reach an agreement.
Trump has deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups and additional bombers with tens of fighter jets and refuellers to the Middle East to put pressure on Iran.
Iran has responded to the military build-up by holding snap live-fire drills, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has said it would target American bases in the region if attacked.
The Iranian Foreign Minister, also the lead negotiator, said on Friday that a war will benefit no one in the region, but no one should undermine Tehran’s sovereignty.
He said that Iran is ready for peaceful negotiations and also maintains full alertness to respond to any military aggression.
