Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei has proclaimed five days of national mourning for the President (PTI/FILES).

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, proclaimed five days of national mourning on Monday in response to the event, according to a statement on his website.

The vice president of Iran’s executive affairs, Mohsen Mansouri, has said that the burial of late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi will take place on Thursday in the north-eastern city of Mashhad.

Elaborating on plans on Monday for Raisi's burial as well as that of others who perished in Sunday’s helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday, Mansouri said several requests have been made by the people in different parts of Iranian provinces to attend the mourning ceremony.

According to media sources, the Iranian education ministry has postponed all students' examinations from Tuesday to Friday, with a nationwide shutdown declared for Wednesday to mourn the late President.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, proclaimed five days of national mourning for the President, according to a statement on his website.

On Monday afternoon, a large crowd gathered in Tehran to mourn the deaths of Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, and Iran's Supreme Leader's Representative in East Azerbaijan, Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem.

The crash occurred on Sunday in Varzaqan province, as Raisi and his accompanying team on three helicopters were on their way from Khoda Afarin province, where he had attended the inauguration ceremony of a storage dam with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev earlier on Sunday, to Tabriz.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and some members of his entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, were confirmed dead on Monday morning after the wreckage of their helicopter was discovered following its crash in bad weather on Sunday near Varzaqan County, nearly 670 kilometres from Tehran.
