Israel strikes Beirut after drone targets Netanyahu's home

Hamas media reported that 73 people died in the strikes, including medical personnel.

Israel strikes Beirut's southern suburbs amid the ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

Israel intensified its military actions on Lebanon and Gaza after a drone exploded near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence in Caesarea, southern Haifa, on Saturday.

The country stated it launched airstrikes on Hezbollah arms facilities in Beirut and Hamas targets in Gaza in retaliation.

Netanyahu and his wife were not at home during the attack. He called it an assassination attempt by “Iran’s proxy Hezbollah” and described it as a “grave mistake.”

In response, Israel struck multiple buildings, including a multi-storey complex in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza.

Hamas media reported that 73 people died in the strikes, including medical personnel.

However, Israel contested these figures, accusing Hamas of exaggeration. It insisted the airstrikes were precise, targeting only Hamas militants.

A drone, launched from Lebanon, targeted Netanyahu’s Caesarea residence, located around 20 kilometres south of Haifa. The prime minister was not present at the time, but Israel claimed Hezbollah has frequently targeted this area.

In a public statement, Netanyahu vowed that this attack would not deter him. He promised that Israel would achieve victory, emphasising their commitment to eliminate threats.

He also referenced the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, whom Israel held responsible for the attacks on 7 October. This event is seen as the catalyst for the ongoing conflict.

The assassination attempt came days after Sinwar’s death, and Israel views it as Hezbollah’s retaliation.

Netanyahu maintained that Israel’s military operations would persist until all objectives were met, aiming to change the security landscape in the region.
