The Israeli army on Thursday reported a deadly airstrike on a UN school in central Gaza, which it claimed housed a "Hamas compound," which the Hamas media office claimed left 27 dead and various injured.
According to the Israeli military, "Israeli fighter jets … conducted a precise strike on a Hamas compound embedded inside a UNRWA school in the area of Nuseirat," adding that "several militants were eliminated."
The IDF claimed that "Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants who belonged to the Nukba Forces and took part in several attacks on communities in southern Israel on October 7 were operating in the compound.
Terror was directed from the area of the school, which was “exploited” and “used as a shelter,” the IDF added.
The Hamas media office, however, reported that the airstrike caused the deaths of at least 27 individuals, with the injured being taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. It accused the Israeli army of carrying out a "horrific massacre […] that shames humanity."
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which received the injured, faced additional challenges due to an electrical generator failure earlier in the night, complicating the treatment of patients, they added.
This incident is part of the broader Israeli invasion of Gaza, which has seen intense and ongoing violence since the October 7 attack on southern Israeli communities.
Reports indicate that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of 36,560 people in Gaza so far.
Meanwhile, reacting to the latest development in the region, Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the Hamas-run government media office, was quoted by the media saying "The occupation uses lying to the public opinion through false fabricated stories to justify the brutal crime it conducted against dozens of displaced people.”
According to reports, talks between Hamas and the Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas regarding a post-war order in the Palestinian territories, are likely to be held in China in mid-June. Two previous reconciliation talks have already taken place in China and Russia.
