The Lebanese health ministry announced on Thursday that recent Israeli airstrikes in various parts of Lebanon have resulted in 78 fatalities and 122 injuries over the past 24 hours.
Lebanese media reports indicate that the total casualty toll since the onset of the conflict now surpasses 3,365 dead, with approximately 14,344 wounded in the ongoing attacks.
Israel’s military has escalated its assaults on neighbouring territories following Donald Trump’s recent election as the 47th president of the United States.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that its ground units have conducted operations against Hezbollah and Hamas fighters in both Lebanon and Gaza, while its air force has targeted locations across Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza.
In Gaza alone, Israeli forces have reportedly caused more than 43,000 deaths over a year of operations in the West Bank.
The conflict intensified following an attack by Hamas on 7 October last year, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,139 people in Israel, including civilians and IDF personnel.
During this attack, Hamas also captured over 250 hostages; more than 100 people reportedly remain in Hamas’s captivity.
In response to the attack, Israel launched a ground operation aimed at rescuing the hostages.
However, despite the extensive military campaign that has levelled 90 per cent of Gaza’s infrastructure, the IDF has so far been unable to retrieve the hostages or meet their stated objectives.
With Hezbollah’s increased involvement from Lebanon, Israeli forces have also moved into the southern parts of the country, aiming to curb Hezbollah’s operational strength.
Analysts suggest that the heightened Israeli offensives are likely to continue until US President-elect Donald Trump assumes office on January 24 next year, as he has pledged to address both the Middle East conflict and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
