The US-Iran peace deal is once again at a crossroads following fresh attacks by Israeli forces on Lebanon on Monday, Lebanese official sources confirmed.

According to mediators, the peace deal was expected to include Israel stopping its attacks on Lebanon — a key condition that Iran had reportedly insisted upon since the talks began in Islamabad.

According to sources, the Israeli army carried out two strikes in Khiam and a drone attack on a car in the town of Kfar Tebnit, where injuries have been reported. Apart from these areas, Nabatieh al-Fawqa also came under Israeli artillery shelling.

As per latest reports, the Israeli army detonated a remotely operated, booby-trapped M113 armoured vehicle on the Haris-Tibnin road.

Meanwhile, Israeli left-wing opposition parties have criticised the peace deal, saying it erodes all the gains achieved by Israeli forces in Lebanon.

Yair Golan, leader of the centre-left Democrats, criticised the agreement in a social media post, stating: “In one signature stroke, immense military achievements secured with the courage of our pilots and the blood of our fighters have been erased while Netanyahu stood on the sidelines – weak, ill, isolated and powerless.”

He described Netanyahu as a failure, saying he would end his tenure with stronger enemies and a weaker Israel.

Meanwhile, the international community has welcomed statements from both the United States and Iran for agreeing to halt all hostilities in the region.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, in a statement issued on Monday, said the agreement “can give much-needed space for deeper negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and other critical issues”.

“Once implemented, the deal should also help ease the global energy crisis,” Kallas said, adding that the European Union “stands ready to contribute to a sustainable resolution”.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also welcomed the deal, saying: “The priority now is its swift and full implementation by all parties.” A new round of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel is scheduled to be held in Washington on June 22, with a focus on Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
