Amid swirling reports of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina potentially seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, engaged in a crucial phone conversation with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Thursday.

The conversation took place as Bangladesh grapples with political upheaval following Hasina’s resignation on August 5, driven by intense student-led protests.

Demonstrations, initially sparked by opposition to the government job quota system, have morphed into a broader anti-government movement, leading to the downfall of the Awami League government.

Jaishankar shared the details of his discussion on social media platform X, stating, "Received a call from UK Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy today. Discussed the situation in Bangladesh and West Asia."

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, echoed these sentiments in a press briefing, confirming that the ongoing developments in Bangladesh and West Asia were the focal points of the conversation.

As Hasina's future remains uncertain, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has dismissed speculation about her seeking asylum abroad, labeling it as mere "rumours." In a recent interview, Joy stated that his mother had yet to make a decision regarding asylum in either the United States or the United Kingdom.

"She has not made a decision on that yet. She is going to stay in Delhi for a little while," Joy remarked, emphasizing that Hasina is currently in Delhi and is accompanied by her daughter.

Meanwhile, the interim government, now led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was formally inaugurated last evening. With the new administration in place, Bangladesh's political landscape is set for further shifts, though the path ahead remains fraught with uncertainty.
