Pakistan reportedly proposed a joint military command with Bangladesh during defence talks in Dhaka, alongside discussions on training and strategic cooperation.

Pakistan has proposed the formation of a joint military command with Bangladesh as part of efforts to strengthen regional defence cooperation, according to sources familiar with recent discussions in Dhaka. The proposal was reportedly put forward on June 28 during a meeting between a Pakistani delegation led by High Commissioner Imran Haider and Brigadier General (Retd.) A.K.M. Shamsul Islam, Defence Adviser to the Prime Minister.

The meeting took place at the Armed Forces Division office in Dhaka Cantonment.

According to Dhaka-based intelligence sources, the two sides held detailed discussions on enhancing defence ties, including the possibility of a joint military command within a broader framework of regional strategic planning. The talks also reportedly covered joint military training, professional exchanges, and long-term coordination between the armed forces of both countries.

However, an official statement issued by Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division described the meeting as a courtesy call focused on strengthening existing bilateral relations, improving defence cooperation, and identifying future areas of collaboration. The statement highlighted the importance of maintaining regular contact between defence institutions, enhancing professional skills, and expanding communication channels.

The development comes amid increased military and diplomatic engagement between the two countries in the recent past. Since political changes in Bangladesh in 2024, there has been a noticeable uptick in high-level visits between military officials of both sides.

Participants in the meeting reportedly agreed that modern defence cooperation extends beyond conventional military capability and increasingly relies on the exchange of knowledge, training, and professional expertise. Both sides expressed positive views on expanding joint training programmes and deepening institutional ties.

Discussions also touched upon broader defence cooperation, including past and potential future procurements. Earlier talks on Bangladesh acquiring JF-17 fighter aircraft from Pakistan had progressed before stalling, while fresh discussions have reportedly begun regarding the purchase of fighter jets from China.

Officials noted that enhanced cooperation in training, skill development, and strategic communication could strengthen defence capabilities over the long term while also building trust and improving bilateral relations.
