Saudi Prince Meets Pakistan PM and Promotes Dialogue Between India and Pakistan over Kashmir Issue. Issue X.

The joint statement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, issued after a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi de-facto ruler Prince Mohammed bin Salman, underscores the significance of dialogue between Islamabad and New Delhi to address their outstanding issues, notably the Kashmir dispute.

This declaration comes in the wake of discussions aimed at bolstering the fraternal relations and exploring avenues for enhanced collaboration across various sectors.

The statement highlights the stress on dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve their longstanding issues, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, with the aim of ensuring peace and stability in the region. However, it reiterates India's stance that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between the two nations and does not entertain third-party intervention.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following India's decision to abrogate Article 370 of its Constitution, revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Pakistan reacted strongly to this move, leading to a downturn in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Despite the differences, the joint statement emphasises the Gulf Kingdom's supportive role in Pakistan's economy and the mutual desire to strengthen trade and investment ties. Both parties reaffirm their commitment to expediting the implementation of a significant investment package worth $5 billion.

Additionally, the leaders discussed regional and global developments of mutual interest, including the situation in Gaza. They called for international efforts to halt Israeli military operations in Gaza and alleviate humanitarian suffering. Furthermore, they emphasised the need to advance the peace process in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Prime Minister Sharif extended an invitation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to undertake an official visit to Pakistan, which was accepted, indicating the continued warmth in bilateral relations. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding fraternal ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Prime Minister Sharif's visit to the Kingdom, his first foreign trip, underscores the importance attached to the bilateral relationship and aims to deepen cooperation across various fronts. The meeting between the two leaders reflects the shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
