At least five people were killed and 12 others remained trapped after a landslide struck northwestern China on Tuesday, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
The landslide occurred shortly before 7 a.m. in Nanhe township of Longnan city in Gansu province. The incident buried 33 people under debris, with rescue teams working to locate those still missing.
The cause of the landslide was not immediately known, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Images and videos released by state broadcaster CCTV showed rescue workers and at least three excavators clearing huge mounds of earth in a densely forested area. The weather at the time appeared calm, with sunny skies and clear conditions.
Authorities evacuated nearby residents as a precaution while emergency personnel continued search and rescue efforts. Officials said the operation was ongoing, with teams racing against time to reach those believed to be trapped beneath the debris.
