Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after Ukraine carried out a massive drone attack on Russia on Sunday night. Lavrov spoke with the US secretary on the phone and discussed the upcoming Moscow-Kyiv Istanbul visit, along with the latest drone strikes by Ukraine.
Just a day before the talks scheduled in Turkiye, two bridges collapsed in Russia’s Bryansk and recently liberated Kursk border regions, leading to the death of seven people and dozens more injured. According to Russian investigators, the bridge collapse was caused by sabotage attempts by Ukrainians, as numerous such incidents have also taken place where Russia’s rail, road, and energy infrastructure was targeted.
On the same day, drones targeted military airfields in Murmansk Region in the country’s north, Ivanovo and Ryazan regions in western Russia, Irkutsk Region in Siberia, and Amur Region in the Far East. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Rubio “expressed sincere condolences on the civilian casualties resulting from the bombings of railway infrastructure in the Bryansk and Kursk regions on 1 June."

Lavrov said the attacks would be thoroughly investigated and “the results will be published in the near future, and the guilty parties will be identified and inevitably punished.” Lavrov and Rubio also “exchanged views on various initiatives concerning the political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” including the upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul scheduled for 2 June.
US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said that Rubio “reiterated President Trump’s call for continued direct talks between Russia and Ukraine to achieve a lasting peace."
In response, Russia launched hundreds of Kamikaze drones targeting Ukraine’s defence industry facilities, as well as military assembly points and warehouses.
