The Louvre Museum in Paris says it will raise entry fees by 45 per cent for most non-European travellers from next year, following the biggest heist in its history.

The museum entry fee, which used to be around 26 dollars, would now be raised to 37 dollars, with a minimum hike of ten dollars applicable from January 2026. These new rates will apply to visitors from outside the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

On Friday, French authorities said that the change is expected to boost annual revenue by up to $23 million by the end of 2026. Last month, multiple robbers broke into the museum after locating a security loophole and stole jewels worth around $102 million.

The heist triggered massive international backlash and drew criticism from experts over France’s security deployment near such important hotspots. Some even criticised French authorities for leaving out security loopholes in the museum.

Meanwhile, the museum authorities said on Friday that the additional funds generated from the ticket sales would be used for improving security, restoring deteriorating infrastructure and other purposes. However, some people have criticised the price hike as unfair and discriminatory, while others believe the security measures need to be upgraded at such a prestigious museum. The Louvre attracted 8.7 million visitors in 2024.
