Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden said nations recognising a Palestinian state is the right move in the right direction.
He said his country, along with others who voted in favour of the recognition, did so because of the actions of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and not Israel.
“Our decision is not against the state of Israel but against the decisions and actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which we disgrace, because those actions are against the modern humanitarian law and against the rules-based international order,” Frieden said.
Our aim is simple: a two-state solution for the peaceful coexistence of both sides. Palestinians need hope, while Israelis need security guarantees, both of which are enshrined in the peaceful separation of the territory.
He went on to say that Europe will not hesitate to sanction Israel if it continues to block humanitarian aid to Gaza. Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the UK recognised the state of Palestine on Sunday, and more countries announced plans to do so.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that his country officially recognises the state of Palestine.
"I declare that today France recognises the state of Palestine," Macron said at an international conference on Palestine in New York ahead of the start of this week's UN General Assembly.

Macron towed a separate line, saying France's recognition "is a defeat for Hamas, just like for all those who ferment anti-Semitism, nurture anti-Zionist obsessions, and want the destruction of the state of Israel."
He praised other nations that also announced the recognition, including Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and San Marino.
Keep in mind, this whole recognition movement was initiated by the French President earlier this year; he is the one leader who remained committed throughout and made other countries adopt what he believed was the right decision given the Israeli actions in Gaza.
Since Oct 7, 2023, Israel's military operations in Gaza have killed over 65,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
