Thirty-two people were killed after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet near the Nepalese border today, according to news agency AFP, citing Chinese media Xinhua. The tremors were felt across several parts of India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.

Nepal is situated in a geologically active area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and making earthquakes a regular occurrence. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, claiming nearly 9,000 lives, injuring more than 22,000, and destroying over half a million homes.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 6:35 am. NCS data also indicated that two further tremors struck the region shortly after the first.

The second tremor, with a magnitude of 4.7, was recorded at 7:02 am at a depth of 10 km, followed by a third tremor of magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 am at a depth of 30 km.

The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar, where people were seen outside their homes and apartments. However, there have been no reports of property damage as a result of the earthquake.

More details awaited.
