A Malaysian beauty queen found herself embroiled in controversy after a video of her dancing during a holiday in Thailand circulated widely on social media, resulting in her dethronement by the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA).
Viru Nikah Terinsip, who clinched the Unduk Ngadau Johor title in 2023, faced backlash for the suggestive dance depicted in the video, performed alongside scantily clad male dancers during her vacation in Thailand.
The incident prompted criticism and debate, leading to the KDCA's decision to strip her of her title.
KDCA President Joseph Pairin Kitingan expressed disappointment, citing the expectations associated with being an Unduk Ngadau, who symbolises the spirit of Huminodun in Dusun mythology.
Kitingan stressed the need for responsible conduct, particularly among public figures, to avoid unwarranted attention and controversy. He noted that while the holiday was a private affair, the viral nature of the video brought it under public scrutiny.
Terinsip accepted the decision gracefully, acknowledging her lapse in judgment and expressing gratitude for the support received from netizens.
''I joined the Unduk Ngadau competition by my own will and returned this title without coercion. I respect my decision. The title is not everything. It is about believing and valuing myself. The title does not determine one's perfection or success. I am not perfect,'' she said.
The 24-year-old added everyone should ''focus on other issues and move forward'' from this incident.
''I am thankful for all the beautiful words coming from netizens, and let's focus on other issues and move forward. Most importantly, please leave my family and friends out as they are not involved in this matter. It is up to you whether you would accept [my explanation] or not, but this comes sincerely from my heart. Thank you for listening,'' she said.
