In a move signaling a potential shift in alliances, the Maldives has acquired its first-ever surveillance drones for patrolling its vast exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from Turkey.
This comes amidst ongoing efforts to establish a 24/7 monitoring system for the Maldivian waters.
Details regarding the specific agreement with the Turkish company remain undisclosed by the Maldivian government.
However, media reports suggest the drones are Baykar TB2 models, delivered earlier this month on March 3rd.
The acquisition coincides with President Mohamed Muizzu's prioritization of maritime security.
Notably, Turkey was the first nation President Muizzu visited upon assuming office in November 2023.
During his visit, he took note of the various military vehicles produced by the country and formed an agreement with a Turkish company to import military drones into his country.
This development comes after President Muizzu, known for his pro-Beijing stance, expressed the government's intent to procure surveillance drones in January upon his return from China.
On March 4, Muizzu also announced that his country is working to establish a 24/7 monitoring system for the Maldivian waters this month to ensure control of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) despite its significantly large area.
The Adhadhu news portal also reported that earlier this year, the President’s Office has amended the Import Duty Waiver Procedure to give the President the discretion to remove import duties on items for use by the security services.
“This is believed to be an amendment to the rules to facilitate the purchase of military drones,” it said.
