The Maldives government's perceived "anti-India stance" has raised concerns among the country's two main opposition parties, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Democrats.

The warning comes just two days after the Maldivian administration announced the docking of a Chinese research and survey ship at one of its ports.

The opposition parties, collectively holding 55 seats in the 87-member house, voiced their support for India amidst strained relations and the Maldives' increasing alignment with China.

The decision to allow a Chinese ship to make a port call for replenishment has triggered apprehensions about a potential geopolitical and military shift in the Indian Ocean Region.

In a joint news conference, MDP's chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Ahmed Saleem, Democrats chief MP Hassan Latheef, and the Parliamentary Group Leader Ali Azim expressed caution about the potential consequences of alienating any development partner, particularly India, deemed the "most long-standing ally" of the Maldives.

The opposition's assessment on the "direction in foreign policy" urged the Maldivian government to collaborate with all development partners, maintaining the traditional approach.

They emphasised that stability and security in the Indian Ocean are integral to the well-being of the Maldives.

President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to China, opting to skip a customary visit to India, further fueled the controversy surrounding the Maldives' inclination towards China.

Known for his pro-China stance, Muizzu's actions and the alleged 'anti-India stance' have intensified diplomatic tensions.

The joint statement by the opposition parties highlighted concerns about the Maldivian government's lack of transparency in financial matters and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements with foreign entities.

While not explicitly naming any country, the opposition underscored the need for openness in dealings with foreign parties.

Additionally, the opposition criticised the Muizzu government's attempts to censor the media and impede press freedom. This condemnation aligns with a broader global concern about democratic values and freedom of expression.

Maldives' announcement regarding the Chinese survey ship docking raised eyebrows, with the government clarifying that no research activities would be conducted in Maldivian waters.

The statement emphasised the nation's history of welcoming vessels from friendly countries for peaceful purposes, a subtle indication of the Maldives' evolving foreign policy orientation.

This development marks a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean, with the Maldives navigating a delicate balance between historic alliances and emerging partnerships.

As China expands its influence in the region, concerns about the Maldives distancing itself from India, a traditional ally, add complexity to regional dynamics.

The opposition's plea for a more inclusive and transparent foreign policy reflects the broader sentiment in the Maldives, emphasising the importance of maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean.

The dynamics between the Maldives, India, and China will likely continue to evolve, impacting not only regional geopolitics but also the Maldives' long-term development trajectory. The diplomatic nuances at play highlight the intricate challenges faced by small island nations navigating global power dynamics.
