Indian boxing legend Mary Kom has stepped down from her role as India’s chef-de-mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics, citing personal reasons.
The announcement was made by PT Usha, the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), following a letter from Kom expressing her inability to continue in the position.
Kom, a six-time world champion and an Olympic bronze medalist, was appointed to the prestigious role on March 21. She was to manage logistical aspects for the Indian contingent during the Games scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
In her resignation letter, Kom expressed deep regret and described her withdrawal as embarrassing but stated she had no other choice due to personal circumstances. She reassured her continued support and enthusiasm for the Indian athletes and the games.
The IOA President, PT Usha, expressed respect for Kom’s decision and assured that consultations for her replacement are underway. Usha also urged respect for Kom's privacy during this period.
Mary Kom’s contribution to Indian sports has been significant, with notable achievements including a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games and multiple Asian championships.
The IOA had also named Shiva Keshavan as the deputy chef-de-mission and Sharath Kamal as the male flag-bearer, with a female flag-bearer to be announced later.
Currently, over 40 Indian athletes have qualified for the Paris Olympics, and the nation is hopeful of surpassing its previous best tally of seven medals achieved in the last Olympic Games.
The decision on Mary Kom’s replacement as chef-de-mission is expected to be made soon as preparations for the Paris Olympics continue.
