A huge blast erupted in Russia’s Tambov region when a fuel wagon exploded on a Russian train travelling along a key war supply route.
The blast, which occurred at Kochetovka-2 station on the strategic Moscow-Voronezh-Rostov route, is said to have been triggered by the train’s derailment and caused a giant inferno that sent flames soaring more than 1,000 feet high into the sky.
Around 30 rail wagons were reportedly damaged in the fire, although there have been no reports of casualties so far. However, the explosion caused immediate disruption in operations, with at least eight inter-city trains delayed, including services between Moscow and Russia-occupied Crimea.
Some reports say the cause of the explosion may have been sabotage with regards the country’s war in Ukraine since the railway line is significant for heavy freight traffic and transports large volumes of fuel, military equipment and bulk supplies to the south of Russia.
Analysts described the route as essential for sustaining operations in southern and south-western directions, including areas close to the Ukrainian border.
