Japanese authorities warned on Tuesday of a heightened possibility that an 8+ magnitude mega quake could strike the country’s northeastern region, following Monday night’s M 7.5 earthquake off Aomori that injured more than 30 people.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said it is impossible to detect exactly when the mega-quake might strike, but the chances are higher than ever before. The authorities have issued advisories asking people along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Chiba prefectures to remain on alert during the next week.
Morikubo Tsukasa, a Cabinet Office official for disaster preparedness, held a press conference on the potential megaquake. He said that, based on the statistics of yesterday’s earthquake and the overall increase in frequency, it suggests a quake with a magnitude of 8 or even higher could occur along the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench off Hokkaido as a follow-up earthquake struck the country late Monday night.

It is unclear whether the quake will occur; however, everyone must remain on alert and evacuate when they are asked to. Officials are now urging people to check evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, and secure homes with backup food and water, along with medicines.
People along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Chiba should remain on high alert for the next week, even if an evacuation recommendation is not issued. The alert is the first since this category of warning was introduced in 2022.
Meanwhile, more than 30 people were injured after yesterday’s strong quake and aftershocks, which created panic among the residents of Japan’s coastal parts.
