Minister warns India over harassment of British Sikhs

British Security Minister Dan Jarvis has said that the targeting of Sikhs by any foreign government would not be tolerated

British Security Minister Dan Jarvis has reassured UK Sikhs that the government will not tolerate harassment or targeting by foreign governments, addressing growing concerns about intimidation linked to the UK Khalistan movement.

Dan Jarvis’s statement follows complaints from UK Sikhs about being targeted by or on behalf of the Indian government. Similar accusations have been made by Sikh organisations in Canada and the United States, many of which support the UK Khalistan movement.

In response, Jarvis sent a letter to the Sikh Federation, emphasising the government’s commitment to protecting individuals and communities in the United Kingdom.

In his letter, dated December 10, Dan Jarvis stated, “We do not tolerate intimidation or threats to life, and through our intelligence agencies and police forces, we will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to keep people safe. Any attempt by any foreign power to intimidate, harass, or harm individuals or communities in the UK will not be tolerated.”

Avtar Singh Khanda had complained about being harassed over the phone by Indian police, before his sudden death last year.

This statement underscores the UK’s stance on ensuring the safety and rights of its citizens, including the Sikh community.

The letter also highlighted the Canadian investigation into the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a proponent of the Khalistan movement and leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), a designated terrorist organisation.

Canada has accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s death, leading to strained relations between the two countries.

Jarvis expressed confidence in Canada’s judicial process and urged India to cooperate with the investigation, stating, “We take the findings from the Canadian investigations very seriously and encourage all involved parties, including the government of India, to cooperate with the legal process.”

The UK Khalistan movement remains a contentious issue for India, which has expressed concern over the safe havens found abroad, particularly in Canada and the UK.

The movement aims to create a separate Sikh nation, Khalistan, carved out of India. While the violent insurgency linked to this cause subsided in India during the 1990s, its presence and support abroad continue to be a significant challenge for Indian authorities.

Dan Jarvis’s letter reinforces the UK government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens, including UK Sikhs, against foreign intimidation.

This development is an important chapter in the ongoing UK news about international relations and the UK Canada Khalistan issue, highlighting the challenges faced by the Sikh diaspora and the political implications of the UK Khalistan movement.
