Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York, voicing India's deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the region while strengthening its ties with Palestine during his meeting with Prez Abbas.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session during Modi’s three-day visit to the US. Addressing the Palestinian issue, Modi emphasised India's support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
“Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views on further strengthening long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine," Modi tweeted, sharing the details of the interaction.
According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the prime minister “expressed deep concern at the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s continued support to the people of Palestine.”
India, while maintaining a balanced approach, has reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict, achieved through direct negotiations.
The two-state solution, according to India, remains the only viable way to ensure lasting peace in the region.
PM Modi's engagement with Abbas comes amidst a series of high-level meetings during his US visit.
Modi earlier attended the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Delaware and held bilateral discussions with US President Joe Biden. During his visit, he also interacted with top tech leaders and addressed the Indian-American community in Long Island.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been alarming. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported, citing Gaza’s Ministry of Health, that between October 2023 and September 2024, over 41,226 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 95,000 injured.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials estimate that over 1,542 Israelis and foreign nationals have lost their lives, with the majority perishing during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
India continues to advocate for a peaceful resolution, urging dialogue between both sides.
