Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, pressing his stance that the path to peace lies in "dialogue and diplomacy."

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Italy's Apulia region, reflecting India's commitment to a human-centric approach to resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Describing the interaction as "very productive," Modi expressed India's eagerness to strengthen bilateral relations with Ukraine. "Had a very productive meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. India is eager to further cement bilateral relations with Ukraine," Modi posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter).

He reiterated India's stance that peace can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the leaders reviewed their bilateral relationship and exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict.

"Furthering India-Ukraine partnership! PM @narendramodi met President @ZelenskyyUa of Ukraine on the sidelines of the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy," Jaiswal stated on 'X'.

He added, "The leaders reviewed the bilateral relationship and exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. PM conveyed that India continues to encourage a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy."

Modi was accompanied by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra during the talks. It is understood that Zelenskyy provided Modi with an update on various aspects of the conflict.

This meeting followed their previous encounter at the G7 summit in Hiroshima in May last year, reinforcing India's consistent stance that the Ukraine conflict should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The Modi-Zelenskyy meeting precedes the Swiss Peace Summit, set to take place at Bürgenstock in Lucerne on June 15 and 16.

Although Switzerland has invited Modi to attend, a senior diplomat will represent India at the summit.
