Flash floods from torrential rains have killed at least 37 people in Morocco's coastal town of Safi.

The death toll from flash floods in Morocco has risen to 37 after heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in southern and central parts of the country. Weather agencies have predicted more heavy rain in the country in the coming days.

Flash floods triggered by torrential rains have killed at least 37 people, with dozens more injured in the coastal town of Safi, officials said.

According to authorities, the one-hour intense rainfall on Sunday triggered deadly flash floods accompanied by mud that inundated dozens of homes, shops, and other commercial structures.

The floods also swept away cars and damaged or blocked many roads in the Atlantic coastal city, located around 300 kilometres (186 miles) south of the capital, Rabat.

At least 32 people were injured in the aftermath of the floods, while nearly 70 homes and businesses in the old city of Safi were also damaged.
Rescue and relief operations are ongoing in the affected regions, with fire and emergency officials searching for more possible casualties.

Meanwhile, the national weather service has predicted more heavy rain from Monday across the African nation.

The country, according to weather monitoring agencies, is witnessing heavy rain and snowfall in the Atlas Mountains after seven consecutive years of severe drought that left the nation's major water reservoirs completely dry.
