Mozambique is witnessing a surge in violence after its Constitutional Council ratified the results of the October elections, confirming the governing Frelimo party's victory. The decision has led to widespread protests and accusations of electoral fraud from opposition groups and protesters.

The unrest has claimed the lives of at least 21 individuals, including two police officers, according to Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Ronda highlighted the intensity of the violence, stating that 236 incidents of serious unrest had been recorded since Monday. Among the wounded are 25 people, with 13 of them being police officers.

The protests erupted immediately after the Constitutional Council's announcement on Monday. Opposition parties and demonstrators allege that the elections held on 9 October were marred by irregularities.

These allegations have been a recurring issue, with Frelimo facing accusations of vote manipulation in previous polls. The party, however, has consistently denied such claims.

In response to the escalating violence, security forces have arrested 78 individuals suspected of involvement in the unrest.

Minister Ronda further emphasised that security measures were being intensified across the nation. He announced that the armed forces would bolster their presence in critical areas to restore order and ensure public safety.

The recent elections and their aftermath have reignited longstanding tensions in Mozambique's political landscape. Frelimo, which has been in power since the country's independence in 1975, faces growing criticism over its handling of democratic processes.

Election observers and opposition leaders have frequently pointed to alleged discrepancies during voting and counting processes, raising concerns about the transparency of the electoral system.

Protesters have voiced their frustrations over what they perceive as a lack of accountability and fairness in governance. The unrest highlights deep-seated grievances among citizens who feel disenfranchised by the political establishment.

As the violence continues to spread, the situation underscores the challenges Mozambique faces in fostering trust and stability within its democratic framework.
