A murder case has been filed against Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others, marking the first such case since her resignation and flight to India.

The case stems from the death of Abu Sayed, a grocery shop owner killed in police firing during a procession on July 19. The procession was in support of the quota reform movement in Mohammadpur.

Among the accused are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.

The case was filed by a well-wisher of the deceased, with several unnamed high-ranking police officials and government officials also implicated.

This development follows widespread protests against Hasina's government over a controversial job quota system, resulting in her ouster and the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Yunus' government has been urged by seven political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), to create a conducive environment for holding free and fair elections.

The BNP has expressed support for the interim government's activities and called for the withdrawal of cases against its leaders, including party chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Zia, 79, was released from jail following Hasina's ouster, having been sentenced to 17 years in prison for graft in 2018.
