Elon Musk’s drug use allegations resurfaced publicly on Friday when he appeared in the Oval Office with a visible 'black eye' at a farewell event with President Donald Trump. President Trump gave Elon Musk a golden key emblazoned with the White House insignia at the Oval Office on Friday.
Musk’s controversial tenure as head of the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) has drawn fresh scrutiny following a New York Times report alleging frequent drug use and erratic behaviour during his time in the administration.
According to sources cited in the report, Musk regularly consumed ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms, raising alarm given his government advisory role.
Though Musk publicly claimed in a March 2024 interview with journalist Don Lemon that he took ketamine only “in small doses every two weeks,” insiders say he used it far more frequently, sometimes daily, allegedly causing bladder issues.
“If you've used too much ketamine, you can't really get work done, and I have a lot of work,” Musk told Lemon.
The report also states that Musk’s daily medication box held around 20 pills, including Adderall, intensifying concerns about his physical and mental well-being during a period when he donated $275 million to Trump’s campaign and assumed a prominent role in the White House.
As Musk’s influence within the Trump administration grew, so did reports of unpredictable conduct. He allegedly insulted cabinet members, and during one political rally, made a gesture resembling a Nazi salute, provoking widespread backlash.
At Friday’s press conference, the Tesla CEO addressed the black eye, saying, “I was just horsing around with Little X and I said, ‘Go ahead, punch me in the face.’”
“And he did. It turns out that even a five-year-old punching you in the face,” he added.
Trump responded to the mark by saying he “didn’t notice” it but joked, “X could do it, if you knew X.”
Musk’s son X — full name X Æ A-Xii — was a frequent presence at the White House during his father’s tenure. He was seen sitting on Musk’s shoulders during the latter’s first Oval Office appearance in February and once picking his nose near Trump’s “Resolute” Desk.
A clip from the press conference quickly went viral on social media, fuelling further speculation about Musk’s alleged drug use.

“He's high as a kite. Which is higher than the last three SpaceX rockets got,” one user wrote.
Another added, “Please detox or get help detoxing before your cocktail mix does you in. This is not sustainable.”
Others defended Musk, saying he looked tired rather than intoxicated.
“He doesn’t look good,” one comment read.
“He had a neck surgery and then went full bore on working for the people ! Wow ppl don’t know what’s it’s like to have these injuries for sure,” another said.
Musk has yet to publicly respond to the latest drug use allegations.
