In response to the expression of gratitude from Maldivian minister Moosa Zameer towards India for renewing the quota to import essential commodities for the fiscal years 2024-2025, Union Minister S Jaishankar reiterated India's steadfast commitment to its policies of 'neighbourhood first' and SAGAR.

Zameer's remarks not only conveyed appreciation but also underscored the enduring friendship between the two nations and their mutual dedication to expanding bilateral trade relations.

This acknowledgment reflects the importance of India's role in supporting the Maldives' economic development and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

In response, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar affirmed India's unwavering adherence to its Neighborhood First policy and SAGAR initiative. These policies prioritise strengthening ties with neighbouring countries and promoting regional cooperation and prosperity.

Jaishankar's statement emphasises India's proactive approach to fostering positive relationships within the region and its commitment to addressing shared challenges through collective action.

The announcement by the Indian High Commission in the Maldives regarding the upward revision of quotas for essential commodities is significant. This decision marks the highest quantities allocated since the inception of the arrangement in 1981.

The increase in quotas for vital construction materials such as river sand and stone aggregates by 25 percent reflects India's recognition of the Maldives' growing infrastructure needs and its willingness to support the country's development projects.

Furthermore, the rise in quotas for other essential items such as eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat flour, and pulses by 5 percent demonstrates India's commitment to ensuring food security and meeting the basic needs of the Maldivian population.

Despite global restrictions on the export of certain items, India continued to supply critical commodities like rice, sugar, and onions to the Maldives last year, underscoring its commitment to supporting the island nation's development efforts.

This recent initiative reaffirms India's dedication to promoting human-centric development in the Maldives. Despite past strains in bilateral relations, both countries are now focused on strengthening economic ties and fostering mutual cooperation.

The decision to renew quotas for essential commodities to the Maldives highlights the enduring bond between the two nations and their shared commitment to fostering regional growth and prosperity.
