Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially confirmed the killing of Mohammad Sinwar, a senior Hamas commander and the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former chief of the group in Gaza. This marks the first public acknowledgment by Israel of Mohammad Sinwar’s death, following previous statements suggesting he had "probably" been eliminated.

According to Israeli intelligence, Mohammad Sinwar was killed in a precision airstrike targeting an underground command centre located beneath the European Hospital in southern Gaza. Reports also indicate that Mohammad Shabana, the commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade, was killed during the same operation.

After the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar—who was believed to have masterminded the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel—Mohammad Sinwar rose to a prominent leadership position within Hamas in southern Gaza. His appointment marked a significant transition in the group's command structure, and his elimination is being viewed as a major blow to Hamas’s military capabilities.

Mohammad Sinwar was a long-standing figure in Hamas’s military wing and had become one of the organization’s most influential commanders following Yahya’s death. His leadership role made him a key architect of Hamas’s battlefield strategy and a major obstacle in ongoing ceasefire negotiations and hostage talks. Speaking before Israel’s parliament, Netanyahu included Mohammad Sinwar in a list of senior Hamas figures killed in Israeli operations. His statement came amid a broader Israeli campaign aimed at systematically dismantling Hamas’s leadership and military infrastructure.

In recent months, Israel has reported the elimination of several top Hamas figures, including military strategist Mohammad Deif and political leader Ismail Haniyeh, in targeted strikes. These operations reflect Israel's continued resolve to weaken Hamas’s command chain in the wake of the 2023 attacks that triggered renewed hostilities.

Netanyahu reiterated that Israel’s military campaign would persist until Hamas is fully dismantled, emphasizing that the threat posed by the group must be neutralised to ensure long-term regional stability.
