'No more EU money left for Ukraine': Hungary PM Viktor Orban

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that the EU has exhausted its financial resources and can no longer support Ukraine. Following a meeting in Brussels, he criticised EU leaders for making “empty promises” on military aid and urged support for US mediation efforts to resolve the conflict.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that the European Union lacks the financial resources to continue supporting Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.

Speaking after a contentious meeting with EU leaders in Brussels, Orban remarked, “The EU doesn’t have a single penny left. It has spent all of its money and financial resources.”

He criticised the EU’s stance on Ukraine, adding, “The EU talks about wanting to continue arming Ukraine, maintaining the Ukrainian army, and funding the functioning of the Ukrainian state… but can’t find any money in its pockets. I think it’s empty promises.”

Orban asserted that the prolonged conflict has strained the economies of EU member states and urged Brussels to support US President Donald Trump’s mediation efforts.

“We must not allow Hungarian families to continue to pay for the economic consequences of the war,” he said.

On Thursday, Hungary refused to sign a joint EU communiqué calling for an increase in military aid to Kyiv. Orban made his position clear, stating, “We will not allow a common European position to be formed that includes Hungary and is pro-war.”

Hungary has repeatedly exercised its veto powers to block or delay EU aid to Ukraine, maintaining that the bloc should focus on diplomacy rather than further escalation with Russia.

The EU remains divided over a proposed €40 billion ($43 billion) military aid package for Ukraine.

Reports suggest that Italy and Spain also rejected the plan, spearheaded by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, deeming it excessively costly.
