North Korea has reportedly fired at least one suspected ballistic missile towards waters off the east of the Korean peninsula. The act coincided with the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the South Korean capital, Seoul, where he is participating in a Summit for Democracy.

The missile launch, confirmed by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, comes amidst heightened tensions in the region.

While details regarding the launch are still emerging, Japan’s Coast Guard indicated that the missile may have already fallen, with the possibility of a second launch.

However, both missiles are believed to have landed outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

North Korea has a history of timing its provocations to coincide with significant political events involving the US, South Korea, and Japan.

This latest missile launch marks the regime's second ballistic missile test this year, following a similar incident in mid-January.

The state’s official media previously described the January projectile as a “hypersonic" missile, highlighting the country's advancement in missile technology.

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been vocal in his criticism of the US and South Korea, recently removing the concept of peaceful unification from the country’s constitution.

Prior to the missile launch, Kim oversaw military drills, including simulated attacks on South Korean border posts, and showcased new weaponry aimed at bolstering the country's defence capabilities.

These actions coincide with joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and the US, which Pyongyang views as a threat.

Despite international pressure and warnings from US President Joe Biden, Kim has shown no signs of backing down from his aggressive stance.
