North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is all set to visit China in the coming week, a rare step beyond the borders of his country for a meeting with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
Experts have said, “The alleged meeting between the three leaders is aimed at building closer trilateral ties, potentially giving more prominent roles to Pyongyang on the international stage.” Beijing on Wednesday is hosting a grand military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.
Kim and Putin are among the 26 world leaders expected to attend the parade, marking the first-ever instance when two men will appear alongside Xi at the same time and at the same event. The presence of three leaders at the same time is a clear message to the West on their standing over the Ukraine war.

China is now assuming more prominence when it comes to asserting its dominance, especially on global issues like the Gaza war, the Ukraine crisis and the Iran-Israel conflict that has redefined global geopolitics. The West, in its past 70 years of history, has never faced an unprecedented challenge like the one that Beijing, with the help of regional allies, is posing to the Western-dominated global order.
Nuclear-armed North Korea and Russia are traditional allies that have grown closer since Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. China and Russia are two of the major backers of the Kim Jong Un regime, which the United States has tried to topple several times. The meeting opens up further possibilities of a reciprocal visit by the Chinese president to Pyongyang for a key anniversary in October.
