North Korea test-fires new air defence missiles

"The firing particularly proved that the technological features of two types of projectiles are very suitable for destroying various aerial targets," reports said.

Missiles being launched in North Korea. North Korea has been steadily advancing its weapons programmes in defiance of international sanctions.

North Korea test-fired two new air defence missiles on Sunday morning in response to ongoing US-South Korea military drills near the borders of the two countries.

Kim Jong Un has accused South Korea of fermenting tensions between the two neighbouring nations by conducting the military drills that Pyongyang views as a dangerous provocation. The reports on Sunday confirmed that the new missiles were based on “unique and special technology”, possibly hinting at the infusion of Russian technology, which maintains the world's most advanced missile technology programme.

"The firing particularly proved that the technological features of two types of projectiles are very suitable for destroying various aerial targets," reports said. Tests were carried out in the presence of Kim Jong Un, who was pictured listening to a top military official with keen interest.

The task, according to reports, was ordered by Kim himself as a response to the ongoing military drills between South Korea and the United States. South Korea's military said Saturday it had fired warning shots at several North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the heavily militarised border separating the two countries earlier in the week.

The UN command, which oversees the border between the two rival neighbouring nations, put the total number of troops who crossed over to the south at 30. Pyongyang state media quoted Army Lieutenant General Ko Jong Chol as saying the incident was a "premeditated and deliberate provocation".

"This is a very serious prelude that would inevitably drive the situation in the southern border area, where a huge number of forces are stationed in confrontation with each other, to the uncontrollable phase," Ko said.
